My great-grandfather worked for the Atlantic Transport Line from 1883 and had been Superintending Engineer of the fleet for many years when he retired in 1912. As a child I was intrigued when members of the family talked of ships with exotic names like Minnetonka and Minnewaska. This website enables me to share my research about this fascinating company and the ships it operated. This website has now been revised to complement rather than
compete with my book on the subject, The
Atlantic Transport Line, 1881-1931: A History with Details on All Ships,
which was published in early 2012. Information has been corrected where
necessary and most of the images have been remade. New information and
many new images have been added, and most of the documents in my collection
have now been posted as PDF files. This website will remain very much a "work in progress."
My research continues, and information found after the book went to press
will be added here routinely. As ever, contributions in the form of corrections,
additions, and images are always welcome and will be gratefully
acknowledged.
