This area of the website offers a selection of background information and remains very much a work in progress. Contemporary books such as The Atlantic Ferry, Its Ships, Men, and Working (Arthur J. Maginnis, 1892) and modern titles such as Stephen Fox's 2003 book Transatlantic: Samuel Cunard, Isambard Brunel, and the Great Atlantic Steamships, give good accounts of life at sea in this era. Much of the information presented here is drawn from The Atlantic Ferry and a series of articles published by Scribner's Magazine in 1891.
