Passenger lists were printed on board ship at the last possible moment and distributed to passengers at the outset of the voyage. Many were kept as souvenirs of the voyage. Early lists were short, because the ships carried few passengers, and were simple documents printed on the blank back of a pre-printed card or paper cover that was then folded in half. After about 1900 additional pages of information useful to passengers was pre-printed and the documents became more elaborate.
